With the move of the BUC founder, Prof. Kyprianou, a new chapter opens for BUC and the University of Warwick joins the continued development of this UK-Mexico research collaboration. Accordingly BUC has become CUWB (CIMAT-UNAM-Warwick-Bath).

7th January 2020

From January to June 2020, Natalia Tobon (CIMAT) and Lizabeth Peñoza Velasco (UNAM) spend six months in Bath as part of a PhD exchange programme supported by SAMBa and the University of Bath, respectively. Natalia was supervised by Marcel Ortgise looking at contact processes on random graphs and Lizabeth by Andreas Kyprianou and Tim Rogers on seedbank models. Unfortunately the panedemic hit a couple of months after their arrival and, like there rest of the country, they went into lockdown. Both chose to stay in Bath through the pandemic for the duration of their placements and experienced life in the UK through their respective support bubbles that they formed with other students.

10 October 2020

A team of applied analysts, mathematical modellers, and geophysicists from UNAM, Bath, Keele, Yakutsk, and St.Petersburg, led by Luis Silva, has been awarded a 3-year CONACyT grant as part of the funding programme Ciencia de Frontera 2019. The supported research project "The evolution of active zones in tectonic plates: a mathematical approach based on low-frequency flexural vibrations" is an exciting opportunity to bring recent cutting-edge mathematical tools to bear on more effective simulation and detection of seismic waves. The award (2.7M Mexican pesos, £100K) will boost the existing joint research and training efforts across the institutions, including the interactions through the BUC platform.

12 May 2020

Uzy Smilansky, Professor Emeritus at Weizmann Institute of Science, has been awarded a competitive David Parkin Visiting Professorship for 2020-21 and will visit Bath for 6 months in the coming academic year, travel restrictions due to COVID-19 permitting.

Professor  Smilansky is a recognised leader in several research areas on the physics-mathematics interface. He is known for raising important questions about the behaviour of complex system that have initiated substantial strands of research, as well as for solving open problems that have provided new insights.

His visit will give a further boost the vigorous research programmes in the Departments of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, via:

6 December 2019

Kirill Cherednichenko and Euan Spence have been awarded a grant to support several activtities with the Institute for Applied Mathematics (IIMAS), UNAM, in a funding call by International Relations Office, University of Bath. The 12-month project will include: a)  mini-courses in Bath by members of the Mathematical Physcis group at IIMAS, on operator theory, scatteing, and their application to homogenisation; b) mini-corses by Cherednichenko and Spence in IIMAS on wave propagation in composites and hybrid asymptotic-numercial methods; c) 6-day workshop of the BUC series in Mexico in December 2020, with several external plenary speakers representing the leadership in the subject area.

21 December 2019

Professor Luis Silva, of the Istitute of Applied Mathematics (IIMAS), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he was Head of the Department of Mathematical Physics (2014-2019), held his sabbatical leave during September 2018 -- August 2019 at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Bath. Professor Silva's research interests range from Jacobi operators and inverse spectral problems for Schrödinger operators to functional models of boundary problems and applications to mechanics of continuous media. Professor Silva was hosted by the research group of Kirill Cherednichenko.

4th October 2019

Professor Javier Rosenblueth visits the University of Bath from IIMAS during the academic year 2019-2020. He will carry out research on optimality conditions for optimal control problems by developing a theory of augmentability. Optimal control problems are studied by several members of the department (not only in the Mathematical Control Theory group to which the host belongs, but also in the Mathematical Biology group and in the Calculus of Variations group). Professor Rosenblueth will contribute to the weekly seminars in Control Theory and in Analysis.

5th August 2019

During the week of 5th August 2019, the first ITT organised in Mexico will take place in collaboration with Bath academics via the BUC network.

The industrial interactive Integrative Think Tank workshop was conceived of as a reserach training tool at the doctoral training centre SAMBa in Bath. Thanks to the close collaboration between Bath, UNAM and CIMAT, this model will be imported to Mexico and trailled for the first time at the BUC ITT. The ITT is an opportunity for mathematicians to work with industrial partners to develop new and co-owned research questions that have a tangeable future.

There were three external partners present at the ITT: CENAPRED, CMB and Samsung.  Shortly after the ITT, CIMAT were invited to sign an agreement to collaborate further with CMB; see here.

30th October 2018

Ramses Mena (UNAM) has been awarded the University of Bath Global Chair for the academic year 2018-2019. He will make three extended visits to Bath.

23-Nov-2018 to  14-Dec-2018

13th-Jan-2019 to 2nd-Feb-2019

12th-June-2019 to 10th-Jul-2019

During this period he will deliver specialist lectures to SAMba students, assist with ITT11, in particular on catstrophe modelling, as well as use the opportunity to develop the first BUC-ITT in the summer of 2019 in Mexico.

Prof. Mena's inaugural lecture is given on the 30th November 2018 and titled "Statistical Methods for Disaster Risk Assessment"

1st October 2018

Juan Carlos Pardo has been awarded the 2018-2019 David Parkin visiting professorship at the University of Bath. During his time in Bath, he will deliver a graduate course and engage in collaborative research with members of Prob-L@B. Together with Kyprianou, he will work on completing their book "Stable Levy processes via the Lamperti-tye representations"

His inaugural lecture took place on 1st October with the title "stochastic population dynamics: an overview"
